Nestling
between the Edwardian opulence of its civic buildings and the high-tec
grandeur of its Millennium stadium, Cardiff Castle, with its manicured
walls and fairy-tale tower, would not be everyone’s idea of
an ancient monument. Yet, if you take the time to leave the bustling
streets and thoroughfares and stroll beyond its magnificent southern
gateway, you will quickly find that the castle represents far more
than the outpourings of one man’s wealth and grandiose ambitions.
The castle has been central to Cardiff’s fortunes
since Roman times and a guided tour, or even a short visit, will
be rewarded with a unique insight into nearly 2,000 years of occupation
and a realisation that the castle represents a fine monument and
a fitting testimonial to the heritage and ideals of a proud city.
Visitors can wander freely around the Castle grounds,
Norman Keep and Roman Wall plus the military museum of the Royal
Regiment of Wales, which is also housed on the Castle site. Access
to the lodgings is by guided tour, and includes some of Burges’
most imaginative and magnificent interiors. Conservation work costing
more than £4m has seen major external work carried out on
the castle's Roman fort, medieval towers and magnificent neo-gothic
house, completing an important phase of the restoration of this
2000 year old international visitor attraction. This work has received
significant financial support from Heritage Lottery Fund and also
from Cadw, who have been very supportive in helping the team achieve
a successful outcome to a very challenging project, which will secure
the future of the Castle throughout this new millennium, and will
help to ensure that the Castle will be available for future generations
of both local people and visitors to enjoy.
